Today I opened up four Hasbro Marvel Legends figures. You have to say Hasbro Marvel Legends because the line used to be run by Toy Biz. Some people disavowed the line because of several changes made by Hasbro when they took over. The first wave from Hasbro was also very poor and set a very low bar. I happen to like several of the changes Hasbro has made since, but that is neither here nor there.

These are Target exclusives that are part of a larger wave of six figures. Each figure in the wave comes with a piece to a larger figure that you can assemble, if you find all the figures. This larger figure is referred to as a Build-A-Figure (BAF). This Target exclusive wave’s BAF is the Red Hulk, sometimes referred to as Rulk by a whole new generation of lazy. Silver Savage and Adam Warlock each came with a leg to this figure. The torso comes with a figure I do not have just yet. So I stood the two legs next to each other on my desk and something looked odd.

It took me a minute to figure it out, but note how both thighs open toward the right. Yep, both my left and right legs have right thighs. If you look closely inside the opening of the thigh, you note that both have markings that say R2.

<img src="http://www.fightingreality.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/two_thighs_one_rulk-004_r2.jpg"/ width="400" height="125"/>

That shouldn’t be. If they were two unique pieces, they would not be labeled the same.

Foo.

Now I need to find someone who just wanted the Adam Warlock figure and doesn’t want their Rulk leg. Hopefully this is just a fluke and not common.

IDW has done many variant covers for quite a few of their published (comic) books. One in particular has gained quite a bit of fanfare over its creativity

Seen above on the left is a variant cover for All Hail Megatron #1. It was drawn by Casey Coller and is an exclusive to a UK comic book store called Apocalypse Comics. Apparently the brilliant idea for this homage to the classic ‘The Killing Joke’ cover (above, right) came straight from Apocalypse Comics themselves. Casey got the opportunity for this after winning a TF fan-artist contest on IDW’s message board. He has since done work on both covers and interior pages for some Transformers books. Casey was apparently going through some stuff when he was commissioned for this piece. You can read more about that here, if you so desire. It should be noted for non-Transformers fans, that the camera is actually a Decepticon named Reflector. He is comprised of three different robots; Viewfinder, Spyglass, and Spectro.

All that aside, it appears that IDW is taking another stab at a classic cover homage with one of their Star Trek books. I believe this book is an alternate reality (a sort of ‘What if?’ style of book). This one seems a lot less creative and on the money, as it were, as The Killing Joke cover, but judge for yourself. Click to enlarge.

The original cover (on the right) is, of course, the classic Uncanny X-Men 141. This issue marked the Days of Future Past storyline. Here is a blurb on the book:

In November, we’re kicking off an all-new STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION series. This one is set in the Myriad Universe, Pocket Books’ new line of “what-if?” tales. The comic is called STAR TREK TNG: THE LAST GENERATION. Details will be forthcoming, but for now, here’s J.K. Woodward’s variant cover for the issue, and his inspiration for the image. Full art and colors by JK.

I was surfing around and came upon this article at Wired.com. Basically it is the video posted above, which is an interview with Neil Gaiman. A book he wrote, Coraline, is being made into a stop-motion animated movie. Not only that, but its being filmed in 3-D by the director from Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. It looks interesting and I’m pretty much game for anything by Neil Gaiman. I recently finished an excellent novel written by him called American Gods. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in fantasy, sci-fi, or mythology.

I’m also a huge fan of stop-motion animation, so this movie looks to be right up my alley. It looks like Coraline will be released in February of 2009. I’ll be checking it out for sure.

The back of Yulia Tymoshenko’s head. This is a really prominent politician in the Ukraine. She apparently is known for her style. Her current hair-do involves a thick braid wrapped around the back of her head making it look like a crown. Its actually pretty neat, but I don’t see how that can all be real hair judging by the constant thickness of the braid throughout its length.

No. I didn’t actually stuff anything, but I did make some stuffing.

Allow me to elaborate.

I had some leftover fish and chips from Sunday. There was not a lot there, but it would be enough if I made a little something else. This sounded like a perfect opportunity to make some Stove Top Stuffing I had bought at the market a few weeks ago and just never had the chance to make. I realized my measuring glass never made it out of the Brighton House with me, but fortunately I had a full set of measuring cups. I measured out the water and put it on to boil, put in the half stick of margarine and let it sit for a bit. As I added the contents of the packet, I couldn’t believe how much was coming out of the single pack. I tried it mix it as best I could as it just got thicker and thicker. I let it sit for a bit longer while I checked the box. As it turns out, a single packet is actually six servings.

Talk about getting served.

I ate an entire bowl of stuffing, since I had eaten the fish and chips while I was making the stuffing. The bowl seemed like a lot to me, but there was still at least twice that left in the pot. I put it in a container and threw it in the fridge for later. Not sure how I’ll reheat it without a microwave, but it sure was easy to make on the stove.

Another year, another celebration of All Hallows’ Eve. Our annual Halloween party took place at The Point, a bar just behind the Bell in Hand in Fanuel Hall. It was a much more intimate venue and worked much better for us this year than the huge hall we had last year. If it had been just slightly larger and just been our friends, I think it would have been perfect. That being said, it was a blast. There were unsurprisingly several Sarah Palin costumes and only one Joker costume. There were certainly some creative costumes like the hot air balloonist, the pedophile, Roger and Jessica Rabbit and the Powerpuff Girls. Two larger groups had themes. Dave, Max, Nate, Jamie, Amy, and several others went with a monopoly theme. Dave was the monopoly guy. Amy was Chance. Jamie was Community Chest. Nate was Go. And Max, well, Max was a thimble. I think he would have had an easier time selling himself as humpty dumpty.

The other group costume was using the Celtics theme. Davidson and I were Brian Scalabrine and Scott Pollard, respectively, the only two white guys on the Celtics this past year, both of whom sat on the bench throughout the playoffs. Some of the girls dressed up as Celtics dancers and Duke dressed up as Gino because everybody was a winner.

It was a challenge to have a costume with no pockets, but it made things interesting. And yes, I brought my own coozie for my beer bottles. I’m just that awesome.

I have amazingly already posted my pictures here.

Happy Halloween!

Mozilla recently revealed an add-on for Firefox called Ubiquity. Basically it serves as a command line for your browser. The catch is that most of the commands are created by users and creating commands is very simple. This allows people to flex their creative muscle and take advantage of current API’s that are available for different sites and create really useful (and more often useless) mashups. If you watch the above video, you can see a few examples of the mashups I’m talking about. Having recently moved into a new apartment, I can fully appreciate the example where he mapped several craigslist apartment listings on a single map with just a few keystrokes. If I ever find some free time, I’d really like to explore some of the things you can do with this and whats already out there.

Pocket Power was available at retail in 1988 to 1989. The sets were made by Sega, but distributed by Tyco Toys (who were later absorbed by Mattel) in the United States. In a quest to find a listing of all the sets and any additional information available, I hit a wall. This was perhaps the first time I turned to the internet for a question and could not be answered. There is next to no information on Pocket Power. The following links were all I could muster from my search engine skills:

A very incomplete Pocket Power article at VirtualToyChest.

Amazon listing for Glo-Bones Pocket Power set

A listing of a dozen dangerous toys in 1989

In 1989 the consumer group, Americans for Democratic Action published a list of deadly toys. The “Bakers Dirty Dozen” was found to be particularly hazardous to young children. It is important for us to recognize and avoid their danger.

7. Pocket Power Rapid Fire
Hand-Held Multi-Shot Target Gun - Tyco Industries

Then I found this blog post. While it doesn’t provide much in the way of information it had two images for, which, I was looking.

Pocket Wave 1:

Pocket Wave 2:

It seemingly looks like a complete listing in the images, but then the virtual toy chest entry shows skateboarder, a submarine and a Ferrari racer. Where are those? When did that come out? There is also I set that I own that is not in the listing. Was there a third less publicized wave?

Among the cache of Pocket Powers I found were:
Thunderblade
Roadblaster
Glo-bones
TurboProp
Indy Racer
Baseball
Squirt Gun
Survival Kit
The set I found that is missing from the above images was a Bowling Alley set.

I will have to take some pictures of the sets I found. If I get a chance to go home sometime in the near future I will also have to take a look in my parents’ basement to see if I still have the back of the packaging. I bet if I had that I’d find a lot more information. Particularly if I can find the bowling alley set’s card back. I kept most of that stuff, much to the occasional chagrin of my parents.
